We were honoured to work with Balmoral Castle on the redesign of their website, an iconic estate steeped in heritage, history, and royal tradition. Our mission was to deliver a digital experience that respects its legacy while meeting the expectations of a modern audience. From ticketing to retail, navigation to brand storytelling, this was about building a future-facing platform without losing sight of the past.
Balmoral Castle’s previous website lacked clarity in navigation, functionality, and narrative. Visitors found it difficult to distinguish between different areas of the estate, such as the Castle vs. the wider Estate. Ticketing was a manual process, offering limited control over seasonal availability, group visits, or staff workflows. The online shop was underdeveloped and didn’t reflect the quality or variety of merchandise on offer. The overall storytelling and branding fell short of showcasing the estate’s royal connection and historic significance, especially in light of recent transitions from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III.
It was clear the site needed a structural and visual overhaul, not just for today's users, but to support future needs such as room bookings, golf experiences, and broader integrations.
To address the immediate and long-term needs of the estate, we approached the project in four key areas:
1. Navigation and Information Architecture
We began by restructuring the website to better differentiate the distinct areas of Balmoral, from the Castle and Estate grounds to visitor attractions, the gift shop, and events. Clear, intuitive navigation was introduced to guide users through these touchpoints, ensuring the estate’s diverse offering could be explored with ease.
2. Ticketing and Planning for the Future
Recognising the limitations of the previous manual system, we partnered with DigiTickets, a platform that provided an advanced ticketing solution tailored to Balmoral’s operational needs. The system allows for:
This created not only a smoother user journey but also an internal system the team could confidently manage.
3. E-Commerce and Retail Integration
To elevate the estate’s merchandising offer, we implemented Shopify, creating a modern and cohesive online store that reflects the quality of Balmoral’s products, from royal souvenirs to exclusive gifts. The shop now functions as a fully integrated part of the site, not an afterthought, offering a straightforward and visually aligned purchasing experience.
4. Visual Design, Brand and Storytelling
A refined visual identity was developed, starting with an updated typography system to create a stronger hierarchy and improved readability across devices. We chose typefaces that echo Balmoral’s timeless elegance while providing clarity and accessibility.
Careful attention was paid to heritage sensitivity, particularly around content tone and imagery, respecting the royal legacy of Queen Elizabeth II and the current reign of King Charles III. The result is a brand presence that is respectful, dignified, and quietly contemporary.
The redesigned Balmoral Castle website strikes a careful balance between reverence and innovation. Visitors can now explore the estate with ease, plan their visit with confidence, and engage with the Balmoral brand long after they’ve left. Internally, the estate team is empowered with tools and systems built for long-term growth and operational ease.
A digital foundation as timeless as the estate itself, ready to begin the next chapter in Balmoral’s story.
